Does finishing KIIP skip the Korean citizenship interview?
2026-05-18
If your long-term goal in Korea is naturalization (귀화), one question matters more than almost any other: do I have to sit the citizenship interview?
The naturalization process generally includes a written test and an interview (면접심사) conducted in Korean, covering the duties of a citizen, Korea’s democratic order, and history and culture. For many applicants, the interview is the most stressful part.
The KIIP shortcut
Here’s the part a lot of people don’t realize early enough: completing KIIP Level 5 and passing the final evaluation (종합평가) can waive the naturalization interview. In other words, the KIIP program isn’t only about visa points and the 사전평가 placement — it’s a recognized path that can remove one of the hardest, most feared steps on the road to a Korean passport.
That changes the math. Time spent doing KIIP well is not just “a Korean class” — for citizenship-track immigrants it’s potentially the difference between facing a Korean-language interview panel and not.
What this means for how you prepare
- Treat the 사전평가 placement seriously. Where you start in KIIP shapes how long the whole journey — up to Level 5 — takes.
- Plan to the finish, not just the next test. The waiver comes at the end (Level 5 + 종합평가), so a plan that works backward from your target makes the path realistic.
- Don’t let language be the wall. The exam content is Korean, but your preparation doesn’t have to be Korean-only — that’s exactly the gap HanSups exists to close.
The honest caveat
Rules, eligibility and exemptions are set by the Korean authorities and can change. Always confirm the current requirements through official sources for your specific visa and pathway before making decisions. This article explains why the KIIP path is worth taking seriously — not legal advice about your individual case.
If citizenship is your goal, finishing KIIP well is one of the highest-leverage things you can do. We’re building HanSups so that doing it well doesn’t depend on already knowing Korean.
