Why the KIIP 사전평가 is so hard — and what actually helps

If you’re an immigrant in Korea, the KIIP 사전평가 (pre-evaluation test) is one of those things everyone tells you to “just take” — without telling you how hard the preparation actually is. It’s not that the Korean is impossibly difficult. It’s that the whole system around it works against the people who need it most.

The exam matters more than people say

Your 사전평가 result places you into a level (단계 0–5) of the Korea Immigration & Integration Program. KIIP completion feeds into visa points (F-2/F-5), residency, and naturalization. So this isn’t a casual language quiz — it can change where you’re allowed to live and your path to citizenship.

Why preparing for it is so hard

  • The lessons are in Korean only. The people who most need help are the ones whose Korean is weakest — and almost every official resource assumes you can already read Korean.
  • Limited class seats. Centers are oversubscribed; waitlists are long.
  • Fees and travel. Classes cost money and time, and you have to physically get there.
  • The sign-up is confusing. The 사회통합정보망 application is clunky and Korean-only.
  • No one tells you your level. There’s no easy diagnostic, no plan, no consultation.
  • Rigid schedules. Fixed class times collide with work and family. There’s no real self-paced option.

None of that is your fault. It’s a structural problem.

What actually helps

  1. Know your level first. Studying without knowing where you stand wastes the little time you have.
  2. Work backward from your exam date. A plan tied to when you sit the exam beats random studying.
  3. Practice with realistic mock tests. Familiarity with the format removes a huge amount of exam-day stress.
  4. Study in a language you understand. You shouldn’t have to decode the instructions to learn the content.
  5. Make it fit your life. Short, daily, mobile sessions beat a class you can’t attend.
